Los Angeles is home to some of the most iconic rock n’ roll venues in the country. As you stroll through Sunset Strip and its sparkly glam rock atmosphere or head to the dim punk clubs scattered throughout the city, you’ll find that our nation’s greatest acts performed on these very stages. A few of those famous spots have unfortunately been shuttered. However, you can still breathe in the energy of rock music at the following rock venues of LA – they are still vibrant and thriving, and we highly recommend scoring tickets to one of their shows today:
THE THREE CLUBS, 1123 VINE ST, LOS ANGELES, CA 90038
Inside this nondescript brick building with a little neon sign is a classic cocktail lounge: the spot welcomes you with low lights, leather booths, and a wall of glittering liquor bottles. As you make your way to the performance room, you’ll immediately sink into its rock club atmosphere. The Three Clubs has hosted such bands as folky The Coals, country Lynda Kay, hardcore It’s Casual and many more.
VIPER ROOM, 8852 SUNSET BLVD, WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA 90069
Established in 1993, Viper Room is a legendary place with a legendary ex-owner, Johnny Depp. Back then, Depp was a bass player for a rock band P – they used to bring the VIP crowd together and rock out. River Phoenix’s death in front of the place made it a tragic landmark. But aside the venue’s history, Viper Room’s bookings are what make it special. This club gave the first exposure to such acts as Steel Panther and Pussycat Dolls. Secret shows and all-star jams – that’s what made Viper Room iconic.
THE ROXY, 9009 SUNSET BLVD, WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA 90069
This hotspot is pure rock n’ roll. The first week it was open, Neil Young played. Everybody from Bob Marley to Bruce Springsteen has recorded live albums at the Sunset Strip rock venue. Heidi Fleiss threw parties here, and John Belushi was there before he OD’ed. Also, Tyler the Creator, front man of Odd Future, was arrested here after he jumped on the venue’s soundboard. As we said – pure Rock n’ roll.
TROUBADOUR, 9081 N SANTA MONICA BLVD, WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA 90069
What a legendary place! We all pass it by while driving on Santa Monica Blvd, and many of us have seen our favorite artists signing their hearts out on Troubadour’s stage. It’s not only the place where James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Elton John grew to be the greatest. It’s where Florence and the Machine, Alabama Shakes, Lana del Rey, Odd Future and many others played their earliest gigs in LA. It’s the place to be in Los Angeles.
THE SATELLITE, 1717 SILVER LAKE BLVD, LOS ANGELES, CA 90026
Everyone from the Foo Fighters to Silversun Pickups to Foster the People and to many others has spent long hours on The Satellite’s stage impressing their crowds. It’s still the place where young bands perfect their act. The sparkly blue and silver curtains draped on the walls, colored stage lights, and the speakers turned all the way up, even if it’s just folk – that’s what you’re in for in this iconic venue.
