The Emmys are upon us! This Sunday, September 22nd, the winners of the most prestigious award in TV industry will be announced. The competition is fierce, as we live in the golden era of television, and every new series is a masterpiece. Although all this year’s nominees are fantastic, the following TV series are the best of the best – they’re definitely worth a binge-watching session:
Russian Doll - 13 Emmy nominations
From the creative minds of Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler, “Russian Doll”
tells a story of a New Yorker Nadia Vulvakov, who is stuck in a death loop in which she must extricate herself. This show is a mesmerizing yet often hilarious detective series that examines trauma and agency. Lyonne’s performance is exceptional and the writing is exquisite. Watch it on Netflix.
Fleabag – 11 Emmy nominations
Fleabag has proven to be one of the most exceptional TV series out there, in terms of writing, and just about everything else. Created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and starring her, the show is a perfect dramedy, combining the humor and darker, deeper plotlines in the most tasteful way. Watch it on Amazon Prime.
Chernobyl – 19 Emmy nominations
Craig Mazin’s five-episode limited series is a haunting recreation of one of history’s worst manmade disasters. Ideas of sacrifice, expertise, obligation, and the danger of the unseen all swirl together to create a portrait of a people in crisis. Chernobyl tells a story of historical value with just the right amount of disturbing and emotional. Watch it on HBO on Demand.
Barry - 17 Emmy nominations
Created by Bill Hader and Alec Berg, Barry is an outstanding comedy drama that tells a story of a hit man from the Midwest who moves to Los Angeles and gets caught up in the city's theatre arts scene. Bill Hader is also the lead actor in the series, and has directed a number of episodes. Comedy and drama are perfectly balanced in Barry, which is why 17 Emmy nominations are well deserved.
