L.A. Theater Productions this month

It’s time to get some culture! L.A. theater scene is no less exciting than Broadway. This month’s best theater production focus on characters going through unbelievably extreme times. They encompass various themes and have many inspiratons in different aspects of history like ancient Greece, the Old Testament, told through dance. They reflect repressive regimes, while pefectly managing to make the audience laugh. Here are this month’s L.A. theater productions you should definitely score tickets to:

Iphigenia in Aulis

The Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman Theater at the Getty Villa

Honor in battle is everything. This Ancient Greece themed play tells a story of Agamemnon, whose Greek ships can’t head for Troy because the winds won’t blow – the will of the goddess Artemis. To appease her, Agamemnon must sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia. Charles Newell, artistic director of Chicago’s Court Theatre, directs this translation by Nicholas Rudall of Euripides’ last surviving play. The play starts on Aug 31 through Sept 30, Thu–Sat, 8pm. The tickets prices are as follows: $25–$45.

The Red Shoes

Center Theatre Group at Ahmanson Theatre

Set to music by Terry Davies based on Bernard Herrmann’s original, this American story centers on a girl obsessed with being the world’s best dancer and the men who fuel that obsession. Matthew Bourne, director-choreographer of The Red Shoes, brings with him Lez Brotherston’s set and costumes and Paule Constable’s lighting.
This theater production runs on Sept 15 through Oct 1. Prices are as follows: $30–$130.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of New York City

Geffen Playhouse

Two grown children with completely different personalities, meet as they sit bedside by their mothers in a shared hospital room. The self-explanatory title and the brilliance of these characters as they stare down death turn out to touch all our emotions while also making us laugh. Trip Cullman directs this premiere with Halley Feiffer’s script, starring Feiffer, Jason Butler Harner, Eileen T’Kaye and JoBeth Williams. This theater production runs on Sept through Oct 8. Pirces are as follows: $25-$90.
