The Los Angeles Area is home to a variety of faiths. It is host to substantial Roman Catholic and Protestant communities, the second largest Jewish population in the USA (behind New York City) and is well represented by Muslims as well as Hindus and Buddhists, among many others.
Finding a suitable church, synagogue, mosque, or temple may be a simple process for some, and a very personal and complex one for others. Different places of worship offer, of course, different ideas and practices; some of historic or architectural significance, some renowned for their strong outreach programs, others for making people feel at home. While there are many sources from where you might find some different places of worship to try, simply looking in the Yellow Pages, listed by denomination, should provide all the religious centers in your neighborhood; also, Faiths LA, www.faithsla.org, describes the various meeting places/faiths within Los Angeles County.
Nationally, you can contract the National Council of Churches, 212-870-2227, www.ncccusa.org, which publishes the Yearbook of American & Canadian Churches, a directory listing thousands of Christian churches (You can order one for $35 at 888-870-3325 or browse the directory links at www.electronicchurch.org, http://churches.net, www.forninistry.com, and www.adherents.com. Synagogues serving all branches of Judaism are listed at www.jewish.com.
