For those of you needing to dig in your yard- say for a garden- call Under Ground Service Alert, 800-227-2600, at least two days before. This non-profit organization will notify the water, phone, cable, and electric companies, which will then send representatives to your place to mark their lines.
Gas service in greater LA and Orange County is provided by So Cal Gas, 800-427-2200, www.socalgas.com. A service establishment fee of $25 is required to set up an account. A credit check will be run when setting up service to deterring the amount of your deposit will be. The deposit will be refunded after one year of timely payments.
Commonly called the DWP, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is the municipal service that provides electricity and water to the majority of Los Angeles. There is a one-time set-up fee of $13 for an apartment and a fee of $15.50 for a home.

The DWP’s conservation efforts benefit homeowners and include a shade tree program. This program runs free workshops for residents who can get up to eight free trees to plant around their home, and free ultra-low flush toilet in exchange for your non-water-saving toilet.
Additional Utility providers include:
- Southern California Edison, 800-655-4555, www.sce.com, provides electricity to areas no covered by the Dip, including Orange County, and within LA County, the communities of Santa Clarita, Culver City, Santa Monica, South Pasadena, Inglewood, and portions of Marina Del Rey and Manhattan Beach.
- Southern California Water Command, 310-838-2143, services other parts of Los Angeles not covered by the DIP, including Culver City, El Segundo, Hawthorne, Redondo Beach, and Inglewood.
- Burbank has its own water and power company, Public Service City of Burbank, 818-238-3700. A $40 deposit is required to set up service, which is refunded after one year of timely payments.
- Malibu is served by the Las Virgins Municipal Water Company, 818-880-4110, and the Los Angeles County Water District #29, 310-456-6621
- Santa Monica has its own water department, the City of Santa Monica Water Department, 310-458-8224.
