The LA Unified School District (LAUSD), www.lausd.k12.ca.us, has the second largest student population in the nation, serving over 740,000 students. As with most metropolitan areas in the USA, student test scores tend to be higher in the wealthier communities. Within LA Unified, the Westside and the San Fernando Valley are home to some of the more highly regarded schools, and Beverly Hills Unified School District is lauded as one of the best school districts in LA County.
Individual neighborhood districts within LA Unified are broken into “clusters.” When considering a prospective neighborhood, call LA Unified to find out which cluster/district your child would be attending, and whether students are bused in (done to ease overcrowding in certain schools). LA Unified’s school locator information line is 213-241-KIDS, or go online to www.lausd.net. To register your child in LA Unified, you must show proof of the child’s age, residency, and immunization for polio, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, whooping cough, measles (rubeola), rubella, and mumps. Call 800-933-8133 for enrollment information. About one-third of the schools within LA Unified are “multi-track” (also called year-around), which is when a student enrolls in one of the three or four possible schedules or “tracks”, but most follow traditional “single track” September to June schedules.
Parents may apply for open enrollment transfers to as many schools as they wish. If parents are applying to send several children to the same school, a separate application must be filled out for each child. Applications are typically accepted during May for the following school year. Within Los Angeles there are over 100 magnet schools and magnet centers that emphasize specialty areas, such as mathematics and science, and performing arts. Contact your prospective district for specific information on its magnet programs and to request an application form. Applicants do not have to meet any criteria (grades, test scores, auditions, etc.) to be admitted to a magnet school, the only exception being the highly gifted magnets (applicants must meet intellectual assessment criteria set by the LAUSD). The application deadline is typically late January for enrollment for the following fall. For an idea, here are two of LA Unified’s magnet schools:
- The Brentwood Science Magnet School, 740 Gretna Green Way, West LA, 310-826-5631, www.lausd.k12.ca.us, is the largest magnet elementary school in the LA Unified School District. Over 1,000 students make up the kindergarten through fifth grades. Studies emphasize one of four areas: Biological Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, and Computer Literacy.
- Portola Middle School, 18720 Linnet St., Tarzana, 818-342-6173, www.lausd.net/Portola_Gifted_MS; offers “enriched and accelerated academic opportunities: among a multi-cultural student body. Students must meet the LA Unified’s intellectual assessment criteria to apply for enrollment in a highly gifted magnet.
