As a renter, can you bring your Portuguese water dog and your Burmese’s cat to Los Angeles? Will that pose a problem? Yes you can bring animals, and yes, it might cause problems. The biggest hurdle to clear will be finding an apartment that will accept pets (fish are, of course, fine). As a general rule, you can expect landlords to prohibit pets, particularly dogs, which means you may have to choose between the perfect apartment and the perfect pet. Be sure to inquire as you search for a pet-friendly home, and don’t plan to sneak one in where they are prohibited. California law also prohibits governorship of certain animals. Currently, prohibited pets include gerbils, ferrets, skunks, and sugar gliders. If you have an unusual animal as a pet, you might want to check on the legality of owning it in California. Dogs and cats, being the most common city pets, needs are addressed here.
Resident dogs (not cats) of the city of Los Angeles are required to be licensed; licenses are available form shelters, through veterinarians, or by mail: write to the Department of Animal Regulation. Allow six to eight weeks for processing. If the application is submitting in person to any department office, processing takes only minutes. The annual fee for dogs is $10 if spayed or neutered and $30 otherwise. Free licenses for spayed or neutered doges are available to seniors (62 years or older) who meet financial requirements and to disabled persons who own a guide dog or service dog. Also, the City of LA Sterilization Fund provides free spacing and neutering for dogs and cats owned by qualified a person living within the City of Los Angeles. Basically, the same person meeting the criteria for free dog license may have their pets altered at no cost. The centers listed below offer spaying and neutering services. All dogs over the age of four month must be vaccinated against rabies. A dog license is issued only when the required rabies vaccination certificate, for a licensed veterinarian, is provided and only as long as the rabies vaccination is current.
