With a vast range of vineyard sites and grape varieties, California remains the host of some of the most dedicated winemakers, who make this one of the most dynamic and powerful wine regions in the world.
Due to the variety of different climates California offers, it has remained a spectacular place for making wine over the last 200 years. However, it was not until the 1960’s that wine become a big demand in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other California cities.
The grape came to California from Spain, by way of Mexico and the Franciscan padres, who established a chain of missions along El Camino Real (the “Kings Highway”, now the US 101). They brought Christianity to Native Americans, along with the wine that was custom to use in celebrating the Sacrament.
The Gold Rush in 1849 also helped spread winemaking throughout the state in the earlier days. One of the initial reasons for a love of wine stemmed from such a wide mix of settlers, who came from a various European backgrounds.
Also, the Golden State’s diverse regions provided a rage of various micro-climates under it’s year round sunshine, which made grape growing easy and practical for the settlers. From the chill oceanic zones along the Pacific Coast, and the searing heat of the San Joaquin Valley (which provided very fertile land), to the snow-capped foothills of the Sierra Nevada, wine making appears everywhere.
Today, California produces roughly 170 million cases of wine each year, and about 90% of the wine made in the United States comes from California; providing a huge variety of winery’s that most the world has yet to compete with.
