Whether new or old, mismatched or part of a set, furniture can be used in many ways to give rooms different effects. Here are some helpful tips on buying and arranging different furniture pieces.
First off, when buying furniture, it is practical to consider buying pieces that can double as storage. That way, space can be saved while still being useful (for instance, buying an end chest with drawers, instead of an end table
Second, buying furniture pieces that stack, separate, and nest can also be practical while still adding style to the room. Nesting tables work well as one unit, or even better as individual tables for entertaining (or whatever the occasion).
Third, glass-topped tables are an easy do-it-yourself project that matches almost any kind of base. These bases may include a pedestal of some kind, a large plant pot, a bench, or any other sturdy object. Make sure the glass is thick enough to support the table size and not too wide where it can become unstable.
Fourth, every decorated home should have its “neutrals”. That is, neutral fabrics which, not only last long on upholstered furniture, but serve as a good basic color. These fabrics should be relatively plain in texture.
Fifth, when looking to buy new furniture, the best that can be afforded is often advised as the wisest choice. Cheaper furniture wares out much faster, despite how nice it looks; so look at the quality of the wood (kiln-dried hardwoods are tough) and perhaps ask for eight-way hand-tied springs. The longer it lasts, the more money you get out of it; and remember that furniture can always be reupholstered.
Sixth, buying textured pieces to accent a room is a great way to add an eclectic feel, and add variety. Pieces made of bamboo, different carved woods, or wicker is some popular choices.
Seventh, when dealing with mismatched, or outdated upholstered furniture, slip covers are an easy, inexpensive way to give a room a new, fresh look. There are different kinds of covers, such as ready-made, semi-custom, and slips that cover furniture perfectly. Different pieces of furniture call for different covers.

Eighth, when dealing with older, unattractive wood furniture, a fresh coat of paint can often do the trick. Also, for a little extra flare, crackle paint, aging techniques, stenciling, or painted accent designs are always an option.
Ninth, the color of furniture and their surrounding walls can either make the pieces stand out or blend in. If looking to make a brown couch stand out, tan or light yellow walls would do a much better job than a deep chocolate color.
Tenth, always make sure to buy pieces of furniture that you love; and if new furniture is not an option, make what you have your own. Bookcases, armoires, chests, and other timeless furniture can adapt anywhere, from room to room or home to home, giving the atmosphere a custom look.
