A living room should support
your lifestyle, and express you. It helps to make a checklist of
the dimensions of the room, and all the things/spaces it needs to
accommodate. Also, don’t leave out the styles you like, and
what you want out of your living room.
First off, avoid blocking pathways that would, otherwise, be natural.
The flow of your room may be between two doors, a door and a window,
or any other direct routes. These pathways should be drawn on a
floor plan in order to keep the furniture arrangement practical.
Second, if looking to make a living room seem bigger, a large mirror
will help it to seem more open, especially if it reflects outside.
All different styles, sizes, and shapes are available, so this too
will add to the room.
Third, when looking into your living room, are all the legs of
your furniture exposed? If so, this can make the room seem more
enclosed or cluttered. Try adding a skirt to the chairs or couch,
this will make the line smoother and make the look of the room flow
better.
Fourth, a coffee table is something that can be utilized out of
just about anything. Get creative; maybe use a chest or tea table
instead of a standard coffee table. Also, make sure it is placed
at least 12 to 16 inches away from the couch or chairs. Keep in
mind that if the sitting area is set higher, you don’t want
to have a really low table, and vice versa.
Fifth, when arranging your living room, place the largest item
first, with the smaller furniture pieces around it. Conversation
areas should usually be arranged in a square or circle, and be 8
to 14 feet across.
Sixth, when there is a window that offers a view, make sure to
place only low pieces of furniture in front of it. Blocking a view
can make a room seem smaller and more closed in.
Seventh, once done placing furniture in
a living room, dress up any empty corners. Plants (real or artificial),
a small chair, a floor light, artwork on an easel, or anything else
that suits your tastes will help the room from looking empty.
Eighth, if you move around a lot, or like to rearrange furniture often, smaller pieces of furnishings might be more practical and still look nice. Love seats instead of a couch, or a chest with your entertainment center inside might be best. Also, a sofa style bed is always an option for visiting guests. However, they are usually not as comfortable to relax on as a regular couch, and might not be worth it.
Ninth, upholstered furniture should be protected from stains and fading. Furniture will often come with cleaning codes to help with those spaghetti stains, while direct sunlight should be blocked to avoid fading.
Tenth, a living room is usually bigger than
most rooms in a house. Emphasize this by adding wall-to-floor draperies,
vertical wall papering, a long mirror or other piece of artwork,
or any other tall piece of furniture that will add height.
