Home offices are a necessity for some, and a luxury for others. Weather your home is large or small; an office space can always be arranged. Here are some ideas to remember when setting up a home office.
Choose a table and chair for your work environment. Maybe you need a lot of space; maybe you only need an area big enough for your laptop; so depending on your needs, you should choose a work desk. Also, if sitting for long periods of time, it is important to have a comfortable chair that will not hurt your back or make you sore. So if your current work chair is a bit on the hard side, try adding cushions to make it more comfortable, this will also help your concentration.
Being cramped up in a corner or right up against a wall can create an uncomfortable work environment. Try placing a desk perpendicular to a wall or up against a window. When given a view to look at, it will help from feeling crowded or even overwhelmed.
Like just about anything, a desk can be slip covered to hide an unattractive finish or water marks. Simply fit a piece of fabric to the surface area of the desk, or have it hang over the whole thing. If you write a lot, fabric is not the best surface for smooth pen strokes, so try placing a piece of glass over the fabric. This will also allow you to slip business cards or reminders into a visible place, without being in the way.
Armoire desks are great for saving space in a smaller home. They are perfect for computers, hide cords, and add a great look to the room once the doors are closed.
Hidden storage is a good way to keep work areas from looking so cluttered. Shelves and cabinets with doors, or a basket with a lid will provide a place to be messy, without looking it. This is especially useful for home offices that are in the living room, or another room where people will be constantly in and out of.
When especially limited on space, try removing the doors of a closet and placing a desk, shelves, and lighting in it. This will help open up more room and works well for an easy fix office.
If short of a desk and you need a quick fix, try making you own. This can be done by simply finding something that can work as a surface (hollow-core door, length of wood, etc.), and placing it on a pair of file cabinets or book cases.
If there is a need for more than one home office, consider installing a counter-like desk that extends along the length of a wall and has multiple places for chairs. This will allow for everyone to spread out, without interfering with each others work.
Always add personality to your work space. From a few framed pictures, to a wall of fine art, this is very important. A simple tack board with inspiring pictures will help you feel more comfortable and at ease while working.
Trying to sort office supplies, but don’t know where to begin? Use the reach test. Items that are used frequently should be put within arms length, and those used more infrequently, should be put away someplace more out of the way.
