The Spanish Colonial style homes were
inspired by Spanish missions, established by catholic missionaries
in California. Usually one story, the typical characteristics of
these homes are of a smaller grade and style.
Low to the ground, adobe brick with plaster
finish covers the exterior walls for an older look. They will often
have red-tile sheds or a hipped roof. Heavy wooden, double doors
welcome you into the front of the house, and are sometimes paneled
or carved. The house creates roofed porches (or verandas) buy being
built in a u-shape; these porches are on the interior side of the
three walls, and connects to all rooms.
Carved wooden posts are spaced along the verandas, and a parapet
wall encloses the froth side of the patio. A few small windows are
places along all sides of the house, and are usually under the exposed
ends of rafters or roof beams. There is an overhanging roof, curved
gables, rounded or rough square porch posts, and an adobe chimney.
Bell- shaped corner fireplaces (or Fogon) are common and
projecting gutters (or Canales) help drain rain water.
This style blends especially well in drier, desert-like areas.
