International
Style
The name coming form a Modern Art exhibit in New York City in 1932,
this style is modeled after drawings and photographs of architects
from fifteen different countries. The main idea of these architects
was to reject non-essential decoration, in place of modern structural
principles, and building supplies such as concrete, glass, and steel.
Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, just near Paris, became a universal
example of this style.
With an asymmetrical façade, this
style is known for its functionality. It has a flat roof, with closed
or boxed eaves, and large expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass. Windows
that meet at a corner, ribbon casement/sliding windows, and glass
blocks are also prevalent. There is a stucco or plaster smooth finish,
that is very flat, and there is no type of pattern or texture to
give the house an ornamental look. The metal casement windows and
plain doors flush with the surface of the house, and there is a
garage attached at one end.
Used as structural elements, steel and
concrete are seen both on the exterior and interior of the home.
Also on the interior, there is built-in furniture and the same,
strictly practical style that the exterior displays. International
style homes, due to there smooth, unornamented style can fit in
to virtually any setting and look at home.
