Marina Del Rey also offers the highest density of restaurant seating in a one-square-mile area, outside of New York City, making it popular with both locals and visitors. The boundaries run North to Washington Street; East to Centinela Boulevard; South to Ballona Creek; and West to Santa Monica Bay/Pacific Ocean. In Marina Del Rey, the area known as the Marina Peninsula, a strip of land between the ocean and the boat harbor is composed of streets and walkways that run perpendicular to the beach. Locals use the alphabetically arranged nautical street names, “Anchorage” down to “Yawl” to refer not only to the streets themselves but also to the warm, inviting beaches at their side. The Marina Peninsula offers both larger and smaller models of condominiums and apartments, as well as upscale mini-mansions. In fact, real estate is at such a premium here that 90% of the residential buildings in Marina Del Rey are multi-unit housing; less than 3% are single detached homes, and these are primarily beach cottages.
An abundance of modern apartments, many built since the 1980s, can be found throughout the rest of Marina Del Rey, with gyms, swimming pools and tennis courts as common features. At the western end of the 90 Freeway, you’ll find new condos offering sweeping views of the city and ocean, complete with the finest amenities. Overall housing prices in Marina Del Rey lean toward the high end; many young professionals just out of college often room together as housing buddies.
