Residents here are typically well off financially and are sometimes a colorful lot with outrageous and cutting edge urban fashion not generally considered the norm.
Los Feliz residents enjoy the closest proximity to Griffith Park, the largest publicly owned park in the United States, occupying 4,400 acres in the hills and featuring the Los Angeles Zoo, the Griffith Park Observatory Planetarium and Elaterium, the Greek Theater, Travel Town Train Park and the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum. Picnic areas, a soccer field and 50 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails offer numerous outdoor activities. Along Hillhurst Avenue near Franklin Avenue is Los Feliz Village, the start of bookstores, trendy eateries and clothing boutiques to the stars. Not to mention many wing-tipped dancers frequent The Derby, 4500 Los Feliz Boulevard, a bar and restaurant that offers free swing lessons in the evenings.
Located along Franklin Avenue, the two-story, multi-bedroom homes -- built in the old-style of Hollywood mansions -- attract many of the ‘stars’; for instance, Madonna once resided behind wrought iron gates with the letter “M” sculpted on it. Area architecture varies greatly from stucco to medieval, but the majority of the residences feature 1930’s opulence, and are houses of huge proportions with price tags to match. Homes in Los Feliz cost a good deal more than those in Silver Lake or Echo Park, and street access to residences are occasionally congested by concertgoers, heading in and out of the Greek Theater in Griffith Park.
