Running through Brentwood’s center, the busy San Vicente Boulevard offers brand-name clothiers, upscale restaurants, bookstores, coffee shops and gourmet groceries. The boulevard also acts as a divider for area residences, with houses located to the north of it, and stylish contemporary apartments/condominiums to the south.
The northwestern-most part of Brentwood is an affluent residential area of palatial homes on shaded streets. Multiple bedrooms—that is, more than three—are typical in these custom homes tucked on quiet streets that curve through hills. These hillside residences translate into big price tags, with higher-end prices also applying to Brentwood’s apartments.
The boundaries of Brentwood run from the North along Sunset Boulevard, to the East at the 405 Freeway, and to Wilshire Boulevard to the south, and Centinela Avenue at the West. The quaint shopping area around Brentwood—where Barrington Avenue meets Sunset Boulevard—includes cafes, bakeries, hair salons, a post office, and a beautiful park. Many joggers and dog walkers love, especially, the wide and grassy me dian that makes up San Vicente Boulevard. This, for the truly motivated, takes exercisers all the way west to the coastline in Santa Monica.
Brentwood is also home to the Getty Center, a billion-dollar “Campus” of buildings housing, among other art-related programs and institutions, the late J. Paul Getty’s collection of European antiquities and art. Designed by noted architect Richard Meier, the mountain-top museum has been a hit with locals and visitors alike who are treated to a magnificent view of the 405 San Diego Freeway, in a meandering electric train ride up the mountain.
